As nations attempt to stake their claims to the resource-rich Arctic, scientists are racing to get up-to-date information on the condition of the sea ice.

They hope it will answer questions on how long ice will remain on the Arctic Ocean.

Pen Hadow, part of the team carrying out the Catlin Arctic Survey, spoke to Al Jazeera's Stephen Cole about their work.
