The US capital and the states surrounding it have been paralysed by the worst snowstorm in decades, which started on Friday.

Authorities in Washington D.C. and several states including - Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania - have declared a state of emergency.

More than half a metre of snow's been dumped, cutting off the power to more than a hundred thousand homes.

Transportation for many is at a standstill as airports shut down and public transport systems have been severely crippled.
