Astronauts aboard the International Space Station prepare for a cargo capsule to make its first pass by the outpost.

The Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX Dragon capsule used GPS navigation data to manoeuvre 2.5 km away from the station.

After a number of tests and the first attempt by astronauts aboard the station to directly command the capsule, it will drop it back into position for docking.

Dragon is carrying about 550 kg of food, water clothing and supplies for the station crew.

When first sighted from the station, the SpaceX Dragon appeared as a lighted dot in the sky.

It will be the first privately-operated supply mission to the space station.
