Gates: Sanctions to spur Iran nuclear talks

US officials have said in the wake of the UN Security Council's adoption of sanctions against Iran's nuclear programme that Washington is still open to talks.

Barack Obama, the US president, Hillary Clinton, his secretary of state, and Robert Gates, the defence secretary, all said the sanctions move did not close the door to talks.

In fact, the UN resolution actually aims to convince Iran to start negotiations, Gates tells Al Jazeera's David Frost. (June 10, 2010)
