Calling it 'unfit' for its purpose, rights group Amnesty International has strongly criticised the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and permanent member vetoes they say serve only the interests of the individual nations.

In its annual report Amnesty says the Security Council should've taken stronger action on the crisis in Syria.

The London-based organisation is recommending reform at the Security Council so a veto by the five permanent members won't be able to stop intervention in cases of gross human rights violations, an act that itself would require agreement by the members of the UN body.
