A loud bang, smoke, silence and the uncertainty if the engine might break down completely. This is the primal fear of all vehicle crews that have started the 1000-mile distance to Rome and back to Brescia at the traditional classic car rallye Mille Miglia. The Beetle team with the starting number 340 has experienced this. Only half an hour after they had started the second stage Stefan Sielaff, Head of the VW Design Centre in Potsdam, and Thomas Hirschberger from AUTO BILD, had to take a compulsory break. While in the 50s such a costly engine failure would have meant the end for the Beetle, nowadays specialists intervene if it comes to the worst. The VW Classic Team has breathed new life into the starting number 340's body with a complete replacement motor even in the shortest time: two hours. Because the clock was ticking...
