STORY: Britain's Queen Elizabeth visited a Titanic exhibition on Wednesday (June 27) in Belfast soon after a historic handshake with former Irish Republican Army (IRA) leader Martin McGuinness in a symbolic gesture of reconciliation.

The Queen visited a Titanic exhibition later, riding on 'The Shipyard Ride'.

The Titanic -- which was built in Belfast -- was considered unsinkable but foundered in frigid Atlantic waters off Newfoundland on April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg.

Around 700 people were rescued but there were too few lifeboats to save the rest, leaving 1,500 to perish.
