ROUGH CUT -- (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

Egypt's first freely elected president, Mohamed Mursi, takes the oath of office before the Supreme Constitutional Court Sunday.

The former Muslim Brotherhood leader beat Ahmed Shafik, an air force general who briefly served as prime minister under deposed dictator Hosni Mubarak, in a run-off election earlier this month.

In a defiant speech Friday, Mursi warned ruling generals about trying to curb his powers and promised a crowd gathered in Tahrir Square a "civil, nationalist, constitutional state."

He now takes on the challenges of improving a struggling economy and bringing stability to a country that has seen widespread unrest since the 2011 revolution that forced President Hosni Mubarak from office.
