Heavy rains caused severe flooding in parts of western Japan on Tuesday (July 3), causing tens of thousands to be evacuated and leaving one person missing.

With rivers overflowing and breaking their banks, evacuation orders have been given for over 20,000 people, local media said.

Stores were flooded and residents faced water flowing through their doors and into their living rooms.

One elderly man went missing in the aftermath of the floods, and police said they suspect he might have been washed away by an overflowing river.

The heavy rains also caused landslides in some areas.

While the rains have abated for now, the area is expected to receive more heavy rains Tuesday evening with Japan's meteorological agency warning against more landslides and flooding.
