It's usually hot, humid and muggy in Manaus - not a place that would propel ordinary people to athletic achievements. But the city with a population of 1.8 million in the middle of the Amazonian rainforest was chosen as one of 12 venues for the 2014 Soccer World Cup in Brazil. The stadium is being built by the German architectural firm Gerkan, Marg and Partners.
