Mexican media estimates suggest that more than 30 people were killed every day, on average, in 2011 due to drug violence in the country.

Felipe Calderon, the Mexican president, is to complete his six-year term this year,
and the issue of crime will be high on the agenda for the 2012 presidential poll. According to local media's figures, around 50,000 people have been killed since the start of Calderon's crackdown on drug gangs in 2006.
