The US Republican Party's presidential race is picking up pace as the first state primary in Iowa passes by.

Polls indicate Mitt Romney holds the lead just days before the primary vote in the state of New Hampshire.

But his opponents are painting him as a poor standard-bearer for the party's conservative brand.
