Suspended Romania president Traian Basescu's hopes of keeping his job have been given a boost by the opposition, after the Democratic Liberal Party urged its supporters to boycott Sunday's referendum.

Having been accused of overstepping his authority, opinion polls show that Basescu's popularity is falling and indicate he is likely to be removed.
