US National Security Advisor Tom Donilon met with Chinese leader-in-waiting, Xi Jinping on Wednesday, concluding a series of bilateral talks between the two countries.
While details of the talks were not released, the conflict in Syria is believed to have been discussed. China and Russia recently vetoed a UN Security Council resolution backed by the US and other Western powers that would have enforced sanctions on the regime.
Xi is expected to succeed Chinese leader Hu Jintao later this year during a once-in-a-decade leadership transition.
