The famous temples of Auytthaya have stood through the rise and fall of kingdoms but floodwater has inundated the province for the past month and seeped deep into the core of these crucial markers of Thai history.
Experts are assessing the damage caused by the floods with unstable foundations, because of the soggy ground, appearing to be the biggest threat.
About $17m will now be spent to shore up the structures, as nearly half of the city's 126 temples will need repairing.
Al Jazeera's Aela Callan reports from Ayutthaya.
