India's 2nd Power Blackout Hits 600 Million People - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
On July 30th, a massive power blackout in India affected over 350 million people and made headlines around the world. To the relief of those millions impacted, power was restored to most areas in less than 24 hours. However, it was just a short intermission before a 2nd larger power outage hit the following day - making the first one seem like a mere dress rehearsal.
While the first outage was concentrated in the northern regions, the 2nd one was much more widespread - affecting eastern as well as northeastern areas - 20 states in total and over 600 million people were impacted by it - making it easily the world's largest power blackout.
Local media showed images of various ways people were working around the situation to go on with their daily lives.
A spokesperson for the Confederation of Indian industry notes in the Washington Post's report - “As one of the emerging economies of the world, which is home to almost a sixth of the world population, it is imperative that our basic infrastructure requirements are in keeping with India’s aspirations,”
