London Olympics 2012: Australia loses gold dignity to Britain

The 2012 London Olympics have been tough for Australia. Australia prides itself on its athletic prowess, so the fact that Australia's former colonial master Great Britain is far outpacing Oz in the medals count only makes things worse.

Although Australia started out with a surprising gold in the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team, it would be 10 days until they received their second gold medal, when sailor Tom Slingsby won the a gold medal in the Laser sailing class.

Australia has traditionally been a Summer Olympics medal powerhouse, but over the past few years their medal counts has been sharply declining. Australia is currently in 11th place in the gold medal rankings, eight spots below Great Britain.
