UNESCO officials will meet in Paris to decide whether mariachi music should be inscribed on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

The Mexican government issued the request for mariachi's recognition amid growing concern that the traditional and native Mexican songs are at risk of being forgotten.
