The new US defence strategy announced by President Barack Obama is also expected to have a huge impact on Europe where around 80,000 US troops are based.

The announcement of cuts in US defence spending follows years of gradual disengagement from Europe, while Europe is facing a new enemy; sovereign debt.

No longer can the countries of Europe bask under the secure umbrella of a US-led NATO, and with Europe\s defensive strength now in question, future threats may require a new approach.
