The opposition hoisted their flag at the gates of Gaddafi's compound even while government forces continued to pound the area with mortar fire.
But rebels were able to force Gaddafi's men to retreat, opening the gates for thousands of Libyans to celebrate their victory.

Both sides had promised to fight until the end
The battle for Gaddafi's compound is over but the jury is still out regarding whether or not this means the end of the war.
