Prime Minister-designate Mario Monti will meet with leaders of Italy's two largest parties on Tuesday to discuss the appointment of his cabinet and the sacrifices needed to reverse the country's economic problems.

While analysts are expecting the former economics professor to appoint a team of technocrats capable of meeting Italy's economic problems head on, parties have insisted that political figures also be given key roles.

Monti, who aims to resolve the issue before seeking a confidence vote on Friday, will try to secure enough support from Italy's feuding politicians to allow a cabinet of experts to speed up delivery of painful reforms needed to put Italy's finances on a sustainable footing.

Al Jazeera's Barbara Serra reports from Rome, Italy.
