Accepting the nomination as the Democratic candidate for the White House, U.S. President Barack Obama called on voters to elect him to a second term - and asking for patience in tough economic times.

"America, I never said this journey would be easy, and I won't promise that now. Yes, our path is harder - but it leads to a better place.

Speaking on the last night of the Democratic National Convention, Obama told Americans they faced two different paths - and that his - not the path of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's - was the way to economic renewal.

"Our challenges can be met. The path we offer may be harder, but it leads to a better place. And I'm asking you to choose that future."

Earlier in the night, Vice President Joe Biden argued for his boss's re-election, highlighting Obama's auto bailout.

"He understood in his gut what it would mean to leave a million people without hope or work if he didn't act."

If re-elected, Obama set a goal of creating 1 million new manufacturing jobs by 2016 - as both candidates head into the final stretch - with just two months left until the November 6th election.
