Relatives of factory workers wait outside a charred building for news of their loved ones.

A fire which swept through a garment factory in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Tuesday night killed at least 289 people.

This man's son was still missing.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) FATHER OF A MISSING SON, LIAQAT ALI, SAYING:

"My son came to work here the day before yesterday. He is still missing."

Bodies were taken to a morgue, many burnt beyond recognition.

The cause of the fire was not clear - but some witnesses said the exit was closed leaving the workers trapped inside.
