7-Year-Old Attends School Using a Robot - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

Homeschooling just took on a whole new meaning.

7-year-old, Devon Carrow attends second grade in West Seneca at Winchester Elementary School. However, he does it from home.

Confusing as it may sound, Carrow’s severe, life-threatening allergies prevent him from physically being in the classroom, but with the help of a VGo robot on wheels, he can virtually interact with his teachers and classmates and walk the hallways. He uses a high-definition camera on his home computer which connects to the mobile robot, allowing him to see the chalkboard. He can visually and audibly participate in all of the activities.

Carrow’s teacher states “He's very attentive. It is not 'just a computer,' it is Devon. He's a student just like everyone else is.”

According to Digital Trends, the VGo is creating quite a hype in medical facilities and school districts, because it “allows a user to see, hear, talk and wander around a remote location”.

Last year, the robot helped a 15-year-old Texas boy attend school from home. Lyndon Baty’s immune system was compromised from kidney disease.
