Both South Ossetia, perched on the slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountains, and Abkhazia on the sun-soaked Black Sea coast, fought wars of independence with Georgia in the early 90's, and won de facto sovereignty but the roots of the conflict between Georgia and its breakaway regions can be traced much further back.
