Hundreds gather at San Francisco's City Hall to honour Chris Stevens - the U.S. Ambassador to Libya who was killed on September 11th.

Steven's brother and sister led the tributes.

"It's very important who your big brother is, and we had the very best. The world needs a lot more big brothers like Chris Stevens."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) TOM STEVENS, BROTHER:

"He was a relentlessly positive and hopeful person, the best was always yet to come. He was a golden guy who foresaw a golden future. And he was always very, very humble." And he taught me over the years to stay positive."

Fluent in Arabic and French, Stevens served as deputy ambassador to Libya from 2007 to 2009.

During the Libyan uprising in 2011 he set up a diplomatic outpost in Benghazi in support of the rebel opposition, which eventually earned him the role of US Ambassador.

But Stevens was killed along with three other Americans on September 11th 2012 in an attack on the US consulate in the city.
