After a bitter debate Roman Catholic Uruguay has voted to legalise all first trimester abortions. The Senate voted to allow women the right, under certain conditions, to end an unwanted pregnancy. Access to terminations will become part of the country's health care system. Until now abortion was punishable by jail for both the woman and doctor.
