A rare albino echidna is rescued and released several weeks later into the wild.

Most of us would consider an echidna a rare sight. These egg laying mammals resemble a hedgehog and are native to Australia.

An albino echidna, which is even harder to find, is gaining worldwide attention. The echidna, named Casper was rescued after he was discovered on the side of the road several weeks ago.

Casper fully recovered and was recently released into the wild, at a nature reserve in Australia.

As soon as officials placed Casper on the ground, he began digging and buried himself until only his spines could be seen. Officials hope that he will find love in the wild and mate. His new location is very close to termite mounds, which will provide him his meals.

The park is also loaded with fellow echidnas, but it is highly doubtful Casper will encounter a companion that resembles himself.

A spokesman for the RSPCA claimed that Casper was a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ find. He stated “It's a very, very rare animal. It's an actual privilege to see an animal like this up close”. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 10,000 echidnas are albino.
