He replaces Mahela Jayawardene and already has some experience of captaincy having led Sri Lanka twice before and captained during the Sri Lankan Premier League - SKPL. He will lead the side against New Zealand in a one-off Twenty20 International although absent will be Jayawardene and his vice-captain Lasith Malinga.
Nuwan Kulasekara has been named as the vice-captain for the match which takes place in Pallekele on 31st October, being the first international since the end of the ICC World Twenty20 where Sri Lanka reached the final only to be beaten by the West Indies.
