Israeli forces fired into Syria on Sunday in what the military called a warning, after stray munitions from fighting between Syrian troops and rebels hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
"Short while ago a mortar, stray mortar hit an IDF post in the Golan Heights. We understand that this is as a result of the internal conflict in Syria and was directed asIsrael. We have fired warning shots into Syrian areas and have also filed a complaint through the U.N. channels regarding this incident," said Israeli army spokeswoman Avital Leibovich.
The incident, described by Israel Radio as the first direct engagement of the Syrian military in the Golan Heights since the countries' 1973 war, highlighted international fears that Syria's civil war could ignite wider regional conflict.
