At least 10 young girls have been killed and two others injured after a land mine exploded in eastern Afghanistan.

Authorities in Nangarhar province said the girls were collecting firewood when one of them struck the devise with an axe.

Most of the victims were aged between nine and 11, according to police.

Those injured are said to be in a critical condition.
