Nigerians living in the remote, northwestern state of Zamfara, lay their dead to rest.

On Sunday, two neighbouring villages were attacked by gunmen, who shot and hacked 10 people to death.

This witness says his family survived the attack by hiding out in the dark of his home.

Police say they suspect the gunmen may be nomadic herdsmen who often clash with farming communities.

Nigeria's Islamist insurgency has been pushed south and west into states like Zamfara after a recent military crackdown.

Analysts say the insurgency has brought a breakdown of law and order and created opportunities for armed gangs and ethnic militias to prey on villagers.
