Tracking devices are being placed in OxyContin bottles.
In recent years, prescription drugs have been among the favorite targets for thieves.
Police offices in New York City have devised a radical approach to catch criminals who steal Oxycontin.
Pharmacies in the city are being sent “bait bottles” which are fitted with GPS tracking devices. A police official states “In the event of a robbery or theft, we'll be able to track the bottle, which may lead us to stash locations across the city.”
The new scheme is part of a program called “Operation Safety Cap” in which police are checking pharmacies to recommend different and new security measures to prevent prescription thefts.
Cops are all-too-aware of pharmacy robberies. Last year, a retired NYPD lieutenant shot a gun-yielding man who had just robbed a pharmacy in East Harlem.
The 24-year-old suspect had stolen cash, Oxycontin and Percocet painkillers and he was declared dead following the shooting. He was suspected of several other violent pharmacy robberies in the surrounding areas.
