Al Qarra - For 10 years, the province of North Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has seen regular clashes between rebel groups and government troops backed by UN peacekeepers. On November 20, M-23 rebels seized the provincial capital of Goma. The rebels, accused by the UN of being supported by neighboring Rwanda, handed the city back to the Kinshasa government 15 days later. Fighting in the mineral-rich region has displaced hundreds of thousands and the High Commissioner for Refugees reports dozens of rapes and other sexual assaults.
