After a massive debate erupted over the age of the sixth accused in the December 16 Delhi gangrape case, sources have said that the MHA has recommended the age of a juvenile to be reduced to 16 from 18. The MHA's recommendation has come after a major controversy erupted over the Juvenile Justice Board's (JJB) decision to declare the 17-year-old sixth accused as minor. The clamour grew to amend the Juvenile Justice Act, with activists questioning how he can be let off so easily. One of the six accused, who raped the 23-year-old paramedic student, was described as the most brutal of the six accused by the Delhi Police in its charge sheet. But as per the Act, he can only be kept at a special home till he attains 18 years of age and he cannot be sent to jail thereafter, which in effect will result in his release.
