Thousands of people in North Korea on Thursday (February 14) held a mass rally in Pyongyang to celebrate the country's "successful" nuclear test.

Video footage provided to Reuters by North Korea's official news agency KCNA showed Pyongyang citizens and soldiers in Kim Il-sung Square for the celebration.

KCNA said speeches celebrating the country's third nuclear test and condemning sanctions launched by the United States were made during the mass rally.

Despite international warnings, North Korea conducted the third nuclear test on Tuesday (February 12).

Pyongyang said that the test was an act of self-defence against "U.S. hostility" and threatened stronger steps if necessary.

The United Nations Security Council condemned the underground test, saying the latest move by Pyongyang "is a grave violation" of relevant resolutions.
