Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) observed a minute of silence on Monday (March 11), two years after a tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 and triggered the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.
At 1446 local time (0546 GMT), 200 workers at Tepco's Tokyo headquarters bowed their heads in remembrance, connected by video link to employees at the Fukushima plant and company President Naomi Hirose.
The March 11, 2011 quake caused a wall of water to breach tsunami defences at the Fukushima plant, which triggered a series of meltdowns that spewed radiation over much of Japan's northeast and forced thousands to evacuate their homes.
Thousands gathered in central Tokyo to protest against nuclear power on Monday, and activists were expected to march on Tepco's headquarters later in the day.
