Supporters of Argentina's Cardinal Bergoglio have been celebrating since he was elected pope on Wednesday (March 13).
Pope Francis is a surprise choice to lead Roman Catholics, and the first non-European pontiff in over 1,000 years.
One cardinal says the appointment will send shockwaves through Latin America.
New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan had been mentioned as a potential pope among a host of other candidates.
After taking part in the Vatican conclave, he says Pope Francis will invigorate Latin America.
