At least 42 people have died in a fire at a Burmese refugee camp in northern Thailand on Friday (March 22), local media reported.

Officials said hundreds of makeshift houses at the Ban Mae Surin camp have been destroyed by the blaze that started on the evening before being extinguished two hours later.

Preliminary investigations suggested the fire may have been triggered by a cooking accident, but further investigation into the cause is still underway, according to local media reports.

The camp, near the Thai-Myanmar border, is home to thousands of ethnic Karen refugees who escaped the fighting between Karen rebels and Myanmar military troops.

Despite a cease-fire signed last year, more than 100,000 Burmese refugees from the conflict areas near the border are still living in camps in northern Thailand.
