Swedish judge supports Assange

Julian Assange - seen here in London's Ecuadorian embassy where he has claimed diplomatic asylum - has a new voice of support.

The Wikileaks founder is fighting extradition to Sweden in connection with sexual assault allegations which the Australian says are trumped up charges.

But on Wednesday Stefan Lindskog, a senior Swedish judge, expressed his support for Assange saying he was right to mistrust the state.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SWEDISH SUPREME COURT JUDGE STEFAN LINDSKOG:

"It is sometimes necessary to view the different authorities of the state as heads of the vicious hydra"

Lindskog went on to say that in leaking confidential government files Assange has acted for the 'greater good'.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SWEDISH SUPREME COURT JUDGE STEFAN LINDSKOG:

"He will be thought of as a person who made public some pieces of classified information to the benefit of mankind"
