Canada's Metis seek heritage recognition

An indigenous mixed-race community in Canada is campaigning for the recognition of its heritage.

The Metis are descendants of European fur traders who married First Nations women centuries ago.

But a court has recently ruled that almost any Canadian with indigenous ancestors could be considered Metis.

That decision is troubling to the many people who have gone to great lengths to retrace and prove their Metis roots.

Al Jazeera's Daniel Lak reports from Winnipeg, Canada.
