Learn about 3 food label ingredients that a nutritionist won't go near.

Reading food labels is complicated to say the least. According to Shape.com, here are three ingredients that nutritionists tend to stay away from.

Number 3 – Steer clear of corn. Not in the vegetable form, but in the modified cornstarch sense.
Along with corn oil, dextrose and maltodextrin, these are all loaded with omega-6 fatty acids that can lead to heart disease. Nutritionists suggest the human body gets an even amount of both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. However, most Americans consume 15 times more omega-6 due to the the prevalence of cornstarch and oil in most products.

Number 2 – Another ingredient to avoid – potassium benzoate. Commonly found in diet soda and fruit drinks, it is usually partnered with sodium. The combination can form benzene which becomes a carcinogen when mixed with Vitamin C. Potassium benzoate can also be found in low-fat salad dressings, apple cider, and syrups.

Number 1 - Just because a label lists wheat as the main ingredient doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Whole grains are certainly good for you, however many bread products contain something known as enriched wheat flour which is entirely different than 100 percent whole-grain. The problem is that enriched flour loses key nutrients during the refining process.
