Germany: Horses and Dreams meets Russia

Germany's most popular equestrian festival and tournament got off to a theatrical start on Wednesday in the western town of Hagen, as performers from partner country, Russia, graced the stage at the opening ceremony of Horses & Dreams.

Horses & Dreams is an annual five day event that combines a party atmosphere with dressage and show jumping. Each year, a different country partners with the Kasselmann Estate to put on the event that over 70,000 people are expected to attend this year.

The opening ceremony saw the Kremlin Equestrian Riding School give hundreds of spectators a short glimpse of what will be on offer during the week, with a showcase of sword fighting techniques. The school's team for Horses & Dreams consists of 14 riders and 15 horses. The shows consist of military acts and equitation with the riders dressed in traditional Cossack attire. Russian dance group Souvenir also graced the stage and performed traditional dances for the audience.

The popular festival was proclaimed open by estate owner, Ullrich Kasselmann and Mario Vasali, who sang the national anthems of Russia, Germany and the European Union.

Horses & Dreams is considered a world class equestrian event and features many Olympic medalists and World champions. The competition runs through until April 21.
