A plane powered by the sun's energy has begun its journey across the United States.

The aircraft dubbed Solar Impulse took off from San Francisco bay early on Friday, and was expected to land in Phoenix after around 15 to 20 hours.

The developers hope to one day pilot the plane all the way around the earth using only sunlight as fuel.
