Nicaragua is planning to begin work on a canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, a massive undertaking to be funded largely by a Chinese consortium. A route has not yet been chosen, but one likely path begins at Bluefields Bay in the east and ends at the country's the southern Pacific coast. Any final route would require digging at least 200 km of waterway. Gravity-fed locks would be built at a number of sites along the chosen route.
