British film director Ken Loach has been in Cannes showing his new film “Jimmy’s Hall.”

Set in 1930s Ireland, it tells the story of political activist James Gralton who comes up against the might of the Catholic Church when he sets up a community hall with dancing and literature lessons.

The latest film by 25-year-old French-Canadian director Xavier Dolan was screened on Thursday. “Mommy” is about a single mum from Montreal and her violent teenage son.

Dolan told euronews he was proud to be in competition with veterans like Ken Loach and Jean-Luc Godard.

“It’s very emotional and very intimidating at the same time,” Dolan said, “but I am very proud of my film and I am very honored to be in their company.”

The two films are amongst 18 competing for this year’s prestigious Palme d’Or which is due to be awarded on Saturday.
