Visitors enjoying and buying oranges at the Orange festival - Tamenglong, Manipur. It was the 10th edition of the annual Orange festival. Oranges were sold out of bamboo baskets.
The Orange festival cum craft exhibition is meant to facilitate the socio-economic upliftment of the people of its district, which is still experiencing the poverty even with the resources available. By taking advantage of the natural, favourable conditions for the growth of horticulture crops they try to better the lives of the people in the community.
The main objective of the festival is to promote tourism and provide an opportunity to orange farmers to display their produce before potential buyers. The first and the second festivals held during the last two years have generated a lot of awareness about the orange and other products of the district not only to the people of the state but to the people from other states and also abroad.
The festival offers an opportunity for both the growers and fruit processing industries to clinch deals with orange farmers. This resourceful but inadequately tapped district requires effective channeling of the available technological know how, quality fruit production, disease and pest management, post harvest technology, processing and effective marketing is the need of the hour. It will wean people away from the age old tradition of shifting cultivation which requires clearing the biodiversity rich thick jungles for growing crops for subsistence.
Tamenglong is blessed with many picturesque locations. The orange festival will be yet a curtain raiser of the campaign to popularize tourist spots in the district such as the mystical Tharon cave, the magnificent Barak waterfalls, the enchanting Bunning meadows and its exotic flowers, and the Zeilad lake, which hosts migratory birds every year.
