Last night I caught and set free a lightning bug
Oh, right around nine times
By the tenth time I had him he was lookin kinda stunned
So I set him free once more.
I lifted up my finger for his climbin tree
Blew all down his back
And I set wind to those old wings of his
And he did fly!
Goodbye my dear lightning bug
So long dear old friend
I wish you well as I say goodbye
Meet a happy end.
Fare thee well my lightning bug
I would see you fly
On you go my firefly
Off to light up the sky.
I turned around to look and see behind
To veiw what may have been before
I saw the sky, it was fading far away
From pink to red to orange to blue to gray
Close to the ground there was a sea of blinking light
I think I saw you there
One fleeting moment when you gave your light to me
You caught my eyes unaware.
Soar on high my darling friend
Let them see your resonating glow
I will blow a kiss to ride the skipping wind
To taste and receive what sorrow.
So, goodbye my lovely lightning bug
So long to a true old friend
I wish you well as I turn away
Find your long happy end.
Peace to you my firefly
Lift off and take flight
Thank you for seeing, touching, sharing with me
My smiling blinking eyes flood with this 'goodnight'
