Residents in central Japan begin cleaning up Sunday morning after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake the night before damaged homes and buildings and left 39 people injured.

Personal items in this house were broken or destroyed... some homes were completely levelled.

Despite the severe looking damage to the homes, officials said every one who was trapped was rescued.

The quake also triggered a landslide that blocked local rail services and roads.

Weather officials said no tsunami warning had been issued, although the quake was felt 110 miles away in Tokyo.

Japan lies on the Ring of Fire arc of volcanoes and oceanic trenches that account for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher.

The 9.0 magnitude quake that shook the ocean off the northern coast of Japan in 2011 triggered a massive tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 people.
