In an effort to diversify its economy, Ecuador is increasing its investment in information technology, democratizing Internet access, and increasing bandwidth. In 2012, 35.1% of the Ecuadoran population had Internet access; three years later, the figure has risen to 46.4%. To bring Internet access to distant and remote communities, the government has established 490 Infocenters, with plans to bring the number up to 782 by the end of the year.
